“Christmas in the New Normal”

A woman in face mask put decorations on a Christmas tree.

Christmas is the day where families and close relatives come together to celebrate the season and give gifts to those they love. But because of the COVID 19 Pandemic, these gatherings are not allowed for it can continue the spread of the virus. And so, in this blog, I will be talking about the cause of the of the Pandemic, the responses of the people about spending Christmas during this time, and the challenges it brought during the holiday.

As you all may know, the reason why we aren’t allowed to go to large gatherings like Christmas get togethers and/or visiting your relatives during the holiday is because of the aformentioned Corona Virus and the dangers it brings. COVID can and will spread if we do these things and we will be vulnerable to it if we do not follow and keep up-to-date with the health protocols that were published by DOH. And so, everyone has to spend there Christmas in there respective homes and distance themselves from their loved ones. It’s hard to spend the holiday especially without knowing if they’re doing alright or they’re not. As a species who depend on communication and develop friendships and relationships, it’s natural for us to know if the person who is close to us are is doing alright or if they’re coping well during this month. And so, people grieved because of the Pandemic. One person responded that “because of the pandemic, I wasn’t able to spend my last Christmas with my relatives as usual.”. Another said that “Christmas feels different without being surrounded by the people you love.”. The Virus brought a lot of challenges like prohibiting social gatherings, preventing you to spend with a relative or family member one last time before they go away, etc.. And because of these challenges people are grieving and feeling down during the holidays. But it doesn’t mean there’s no hope for them. People are finding ways to connect with the use of technology because of these challenges whilst following the health protocols. It may not be how people usually celebrate Christmas, but it’s better than nothing!

In conclusion, We aren’t allowed to go to large gatherings because of the Pandemic. And so, we have to follow the health protocols during this time of the year. But because of this, people are grieving for the safety of their loved ones and aren’t usually celebrating as cheerfully as before. But people are finding ways to get through the challenges of COVID with the use of technology.

  1. Hey there and Merry Christmas! I agree that this pandemic has made us all anxious, depressed and other negative emotions. It's also sad that we cannot celebrate Christmas like before, but we have to be strong and still celebrate the Holidays in other ways.
