Education During the Pandemic

School of Education professor Brooke Soles (top row, second from left) participates in an online meeting with some of her master's students.

Hello! In this blog, I will be talking about how the COVID - 19 virus affected the quality of education in schools today. As the COVID - 19 virus spreads in the Philippines faster than wildfire in a forest, so did the challenges that the virus brought along with. And those challenges affected the quality of education. And as a student myself, I cannot help but agree with that statement.

When the COVID - 19 virus arrived in the Philippines, it changed everything, including the quality of the education. And because of that virus, the whole country had to go on lockdown and everyone was prohibited from attending large gatherings, like churches, parties, and of course, schools. Because of that, Dep-Ed had to resort to Digital Learning in order to follow through with the health protocol that the Department of Health (DOH) implemented. And with that, came the challenges of the pandemic. Because Dep-Ed resorted to Digital Learning, every student was recommended to use devices like Laptops, Computers, etc. in order to follow through with it. But because of this, families who didn’t have these devices are going struggle because of the virus and what it did to affect the livelihood of the families. And so, some students may or may not be able to get the education they would normally obtain by going to normal classes. And even if they do, they won’t retain much knowledge from that way of learning because people these days can just search for answers in places like Google and Safari. Or find the answers through other sources. As a student myself, I find this way of learning less effective, and so do other students. My friends, who are also my classmates in school, think so too. And if you search what other people think in the internet, you’ll see other students saying “Learning at school is best for me” or “I did not realize that I took my routine and school day for granted until now” and also that some students say that the Online Learning was good in a way.

In conclusion, when the virus arrived in the Philippines, everything changed. Because of that, it changed the quality of education in schools. Because of the health protocols implemented by the DOH, the Dep-Ed had to resort to Digital learning. Students are having difficulty through this because of their situation with their money and their livelihood affected by the virus. And students are either happy with it or not.

  1. It is true that the pandemic has drastically changed our way of living. Im also greatful that you included where someone said that they took their routine and school days for granted because i relate to that person on how having to adjust my daily routine was harder than I expected.

  2. Hello Zuirich! Your blog is short, impactful and worth to read. It is true that we have taken our school days for granted. I like how you elaborated the setbacks of the implemented learning mode of Dep-Ed and how you recognized distance learning was not all bad and was good in some ways. Definitely will read more of your works! Keep writing wonderfully!

  3. I agree that we took my school days for granted and I wished I enjoyed it more and now I don't have that much memories and all I remember is crying, cramming, staying up late to finish all my modyuls

  4. The corona virus did ruin a lot, and it really made a big impact on the quality of education in the Philippines. Although, I am glad DepEd has the blended modality as an option besides modular and digital modality. This is really helpful since teachers are now able to discuss the lessons to the students, but still, the same consequence maintains. Not all students has the access of proper internet connection.
