Discerning Information

Social Media are softwares or apps that enable you to interact with other people in the web and exchange and share ideas with others. They hold many different features such as messaging, sharing, posting, amongst other things. These features help in providing information to others that need it and help them find a solution to their problems. These including disasters or events that bring misfortune to those affected by it.

In the past, the Philippines were hit by many problems in the past. The destruction of the Manila Cathedral due to an earthquake, the Eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the Haiphong Typhoon incident, and many more. At the time, social media didn't exist back then. The internet was wasn't even common at the time. When those disasters struck the Philippines, many people died and many suffered due to the loss of their loved ones. During a time of disaster and panic, social media can help for it can validate information by providing proof or evidences about the info they present. What's more, it can help fact-check fake news by providing information from trusted sources. The information that social media provides and its ability to recognize fake news and false information can help when it comes to natural disasters as seen in the event of the Typhoon Yolanda back in 2013. When calamity struck, many people lost their lives and suffered due to the destruction it brought to the country. Many people were also lost and couldn't find their loved ones through the leftover debris the typhoon left. But those people were able to connect with the ones they thought died during the event. And it was all because of the People Finder database. Without it many wouldn't have been able to see their loved ones once again.

In short, social media is proved to be able to discern information through means of providing proof that the information is legit and the source of the information provided is from a trusted source. With it's ability to do so, it can help those who are struck with disasters like the Typhoon Yolanda back in 2013. Social media is continuing to help in many ways as new disasters hit the Philippines like the COVID-19 Pandemic. And if it were to exist in the past, then maybe it could've been able to help those who were struck with similar occurences.
