"Veteran Valor"

Image
In April 8, 1942, the senior U.S. commander of Bataan saw how it was useless to fight back against the 65th  Brigade of Japan. And so on the next day of April 9, they negotiated with the Major General of Japan and surrendered a total of 76,000 starving and disease-ridden soldiers, with 64,400 of them being Filipinos and 12,000 of them being Americans. This led to the infamous event called the Bataan Death March, resulting in a thousand deaths from starvation, mistreatment, and disease along the 65 miles from Mariveles, on the southern end of the Bataan Peninsula, to San Fernando. This is the reason why they celebrate the Day of Valor, or Araw ng Kagitingan. But what is Araw ng Kagitingan? You’ll find out in this Blog. Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as the Day of Valor, is a non-working holiday where people remember and respect the heroism of Filipinos and Americans who helped bring democracy and freedom in the Philippines during the time of World War II. It is celebrated on the 9th...

“Reflecting through Faith in the Pandemic”

Image
As a Newborn Christian, I never celebrated Lenten season because, well, Religion. It’s my first time hearing about this despite living in a Region with a lot of Catholics present. And so, I will be doing a little research about this season because even if I am the minority in this situation, I am curious as to how they are celebrating this during the Pandemic.   According to what I have read, Lenten Season is a time where Filipino people, specifically the Catholics, are reminded of Christ’s passion, suffering, death, and resurrection. The reason as to why they celebrate it, is to set aside time to reflect on Jesus Christ’s suffering and resurrection. It spans up to 40 days, with the season starting on Ash Wednesday and ending before Easter Sunday. Another thing that happens during this time is Holy week, which happens a week before Easter Sunday. It’s said that it starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Black Saturday, the day before Easter. Now, during the whole season, they would also ...

Kannawidan on the Weekends

Image
As someone who lived in Ilocos Sur for 5 years without knowing any dialect apart from the words "yes"and "no, you expect them to know what Kannawidan Festival is all about. I don't. So come with me, as I, who knows nothing about this festivity, learn and explain to you all about it. So to my surprise, Kannawidan isn't actually some sort of spell to cast on my enemies, but is actually a celebration for the separation of both Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte. (Very much how I like my Oreos). It’s where people perform various activities such as folk dancing, traditional tribal rituals, singing, contests, and even cooking! From what I researched, it’s said that it’s their way of saying thanks to the Almighty for their blessings, a rich heritage province, and family. The reason though apart from what I said as to why they celebrate is so that Gen Z children will learn more and appreciate their culture and tradition and not Edward from the Twilight Saga (btw, do not watch!)...

“The Bright Light of the Bigueños”

Image
Christmas is the season of giving gifts to your loved ones and expressing your feelings to the people you love. And in the Philippines, in the lovely city of Vigan, is the time for Bigueños  and Ilocanos alike to express themselves with the use of their creativity and talent to show their pride and love for being a Filipino even amidst the Pandemic. And so, in this blog, I will be talking about how Bigueños  celebrated their bright white Christmas.   Even though the Pandemic has greatly affected the lives of everyone including the Bigueños , they still find ways to celebrate the Happy Holidays with their loved ones. With the rising evolution of technology, they used it to their advantage to continue on and celebrate it with the Christmas spirit whilst abiding with the Minimum Health Standards. They did so by hosting most of the events through online means and holding home-based competitions. One example is the Christmas Card Making Competition. In this event, the Bigueño ...

The End of the Long Awaiting Quarter

Image
At long last, the 2nd  Quarter is finally ending. After long hours of doing school work and a bunch of thematic projects, it ’s finally over. I’ve learned a lot during the time. And I gotta say, it was pretty neat!   In this Quarter, I learned so many things! Lenses, the economy, HTML Files, and many more! But the one thing that I really liked and cherish is the things that I learned in ESP. In that subject, I learned about instinct and humane actions, motivation and how actions are considered humane depending on said motivation, responsibility, and so much! During that time in ESP, I learned how to be more better as a person and that’s something that I will always strive for in my life. And also because it’s my New Year’s Resolution. But of course, there were some difficulties when it came to learning. It was a bit difficult to follow through with this quarter’s topics without Google Meets and all that. But I was able to understand them in the end. The one thing that was supe...

“The Start of a New Year”

Image
As Christmas day ends with new gifts and toys, so will the year, with laughter and joy. As everyone waits for the year to end, they think of what will come next, or what it will send. Will it be good or bad? Who knows! So it’s better to prepare for what it will hold. As we brace ourselves for the New Year to roll in, we will cherish the memories and friendships as it begins. In this blog I will be talking about the memories I made and what I think the New Year will bring.   I made a lot of memories this year, some memorable, some I wanna burn and throw it out because of pure embarrassment. But overall, if I were to go through the whole year again, I’d prolly do the same thing I did because if I had not made those decisions, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. And I hope that this year, 2022, I will become a better me than the me last year. I don’t know what 2022 will hold for me , But I do hope that it’s better than last year because at that time, things we’re pretty bad with the ...

“Christmas in the New Normal”

Image
Christmas is the day where families and close relatives come together to celebrate the season and give gifts to those they love. But because of the COVID 19 Pandemic, these gatherings are not allowed for it can continue the spread of the virus. And so, in this blog, I will be talking about the cause of the of the Pandemic, the responses of the people about spending Christmas during this time, and the challenges it brought during the holiday.   As you all may know, the reason why we aren’t allowed to go to large gatherings like Christmas get togethers and/or visiting your relatives during the holiday is because of the aformentioned Corona Virus and the dangers it brings. COVID can and will spread if we do these things and we will be vulnerable to it if we do not follow and keep up-to-date with the health protocols that were published by DOH. And so, everyone has to spend there Christmas in there respective homes and distance themselves from their loved ones. It’s hard to spend the h...
